What's OLED?

A technology that is waiting in line to be applied.  -Edward Lin 2018/11/23

It's coming to a time where LED techniques aren't new anymore. Through all the years of advanced development,  2018 has no doubt being a big year for screening technology. Curved screens being released, bendable phone pending to launch...etc,  our screens turn to not be merely LCD panels anymore. You can see bigger wall compose of LED light dots forming a Justin Bieber, LCD panel with LED back light popularizing our home TV replacing every TFT we got, then you begin to wonder where is the trend leading you, hence you heard OLED.

What's OLED? Before we discuss the issue, we have to know what LED is first. According to Wikipedia, LED is an abbreviation for Light Emitting Diode, compose of a two-lead semiconductor light source, and is a p-n junction diode that emit lights when activated. The corresponding energy to the jump of photons between energy band gaps leads to a color changing phenomenon,  thus the light source. Having many advantages than regular light bulbs, it includes a lower energy consumption, longer lifetime and also improves the physical robustness, OLED is something newer and better, and can be recently seen at the release of the iPhone X and XS.

Where the emissive electroluminescent layer in LED being replaced by organic compounds, the OLED  panel can be a really good substitution for both LED and LCD panels. It itself can produce it's own backlight, and can be controlled on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Contrast in OLED displays are far higher than LCD-LED panels, which black and white has clearly a wider color gap, capable of presenting a more precise use of color. The viewing angles of the OLED display is also something notable. By having a wider viewing angle, it means you can walk around and simultaneously watching the TV clearly, without any misshape and deformation. Best of all, it's made organically, meaning that the entire making process is eco friendly, which is another win for OLED displays.
