Signage at stores in Taiwan

What we have really need to evolve. -Edward Lin 12/12

On the south east coast of mainland China, is a beautiful island having one of the most fabulous natural views and the warmest people in the world. It has inherit its' 5000 years of Chinese traditions from China, and is the only place that still uses Traditional Chinese Characters. Where am I talking about? Taiwan.

Taiwan has been publicly known for it's convenient store, and is really common to see several 7-11 and FamilyMart neighboring each other competing for sales. Due to the highly competitive market, if wanting to earn every single penny on the 36,197 km2 island, every single notice from customers has to count. As a result, the advertising industry is also rather prosperous than can imagine. In order to get as much attention as possible, except for traditional signage in use and advertising to boost your business, many owners have adjust themselves to the application of digital signage marketing, by installing larger display in store.

The most common people get to see in stores is a regular TV player. Even though the panel of a TV player may not be the best for industrial use, it's what people tend to have in mind when they want to apply their advertisement. However it has several pretty obvious downfalls : not available for longer extension time of use (since the life and lights are designed for home use), not able to customize the ad and no adjustable other content to play. Some business owners may own a TV and had managed to find ones with media player already installed on it, which can accordingly get the ad to run smoothly and repeatedly on their own, but that's it, still a home use TV. The second most seen digital signage in Taiwan is probably a projector with a projection screen. It is really common since people think that projecting from their personal computer is easy. However this method requires 3 things to happen: a set of projection screen and projector, a PC to standby no matter what, and a large enough indoor space where customers won't walk pass by. Also the image quality of the projection is pretty rough, and cannot be a comparison the the last TV method. Furthermore, if letting the projector run 24 hours, the cost of repairing and maintaining must be huge!

The third people often use in Taiwanese industry is the LED player connected to a digital signage player, which is really rare and can be only found in the busy part of big cities. The fourth, well, unfortunately business owners in Taiwan still tend to use the traditional way to advertise. Signage made from PVC canvas literally made the street view of Taiwan ( that really is ugly on any building that comes in sight ), and the waste ? It's not even to count and cannot be recycled.

To all what I have listed, I've got one solution. Quit using home TV and install a digital signage that is designed for industrial use. Apply a digital signage player instead of your home PC. For bigger and better quality, install video walls that is connected to the media player, not buying a projector running 24 hours for 240p quality. Last but not least, for the Earths sake, no more in-recyclable PVC ugly canvas that will kill the environment. I really do hope one day my favorite country in the world can turn into something different than now.
