When we think about the industries that are affected by digital signage the obvious connections we draw are to malls, transportation centers, and restaurants. These industries smoothly integrate digital signage and marketing into their everyday functions. Malls and retail centers use digital imaging to increase customer interest and overall sales. Restaurants create digital menu boards that easily display images of customer favorites and latest meal combos. While transportation centers display the arrivals and departures of trains, buses, and planes. All of this information a necessity for the operation of these industries. But, where can we find digital signage where we might not expect it?
Stadiums
In stadiums we are beginning to see the implementation of digital signage. One way is to use display screens to show seating areas. There is nothing worse than trying to find your seat in a crowded stadium that you've never been in before. Or we could see digital signage displaying ticket availability at a crowded show or sporting event. Not to mention, that food courts in these arenas should be using this type of media to display their menus to the crowds.
Hospitals
Hospitals are definitely not the first place people think of when they think about digital signage, but more often than not hospitals are using this technology. Not only can digital boards display wait times or queue order, but they could also display information to distract patients and families from the reason they are at the hospital in the first place. These monitors could also be useful for transmitting information to doctors. Whether it be displaying operation order or open rooms, digital signage is a must for any successful hospital.
Museums
One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new place is to explore the local museums. This introduces me to the environment that I am in and also explains the context of how things came to be. I'm one of those museums goers that buys the narrated audio pack so that I get the full experience. When I walk into museums I have grown accustomed to seeing the audio options on a large display screen. With these displays I am able to see and decided what option best suites my needs by the time I make it through the line to the counter. The digital signage display not only aids my decision but also makes the lives of attendants easier as they don't have to explain the package options to the thousands of museums goers.
Movie Theaters
If there is one place where digital signage is in high demand it would be movie theaters. Pretty much any location throughout a movie theater could be improved with the addition of a monitor. We usually see these monitors at the ticket counter displaying show times. Once we have purchased our ticket we go to the concessions stand where all our favorite movie snacks our displayed on screens. This achieves the same effect as digital signage in restaurants. We even might see digital movie posters displayed on monitors throughout the theater promoting future releases.
Universities
Universities kind of cover all the areas we already discussed. In dining halls food menus can be displayed and in stadiums game times are available. However there is nothing worse than being on a college tour and getting totally disoriented. Outdoor signage kiosks with wayfinding technology can help visitors and students find their way. Not to mention, that outside of classrooms smaller boards could display room availability to students. I know that at my university I would much rather approach a screen with the answers to my questions rather than have to ask a passerby and appear as one of "those dumb freshman".
The possibilities are endless for digital signage. As cost drops this technology will become more popular. Simply, for any company that is looking to take the next step to improve business the solution is digital signage.
