Where Will Digital Signage Become More Common?

1. Fast Food Restaurants
While fast food restaurants have always been the convenient option to food ordering they will only continue to improve. Most of us are now used to pulling through the drive-thru of a restaurant quickly glancing over the outdoor monitors and then reporting our order to the microphone. The first thing we should notice is that these outdoor monitors are not the old-fashioned drive-thru menu with interchangeable panels. This is an up to date menu displaying the latest offers and meal combos. This convenient display of information makes the consumers' order fast and easy.

However, what if there was a way to make our restaurant interactions even smoother? Some fast food restaurants have begun to roll out ordering kiosks. These kiosks display the digital menu in the same fashion as the drive-thru display, but the touchscreen allows customers to select their desired meal. These are most commonly walk-up displays inside of the restaurant, but still do not require interpersonal interaction; the situation that most fast paced people are trying to avoid these days. The kiosk then takes your selection and relays that information to the kitchen where your food will be prepared and then delivered.

The only downside I currently see to this type of technology is the sanitation of the kiosk screens. Moreover, the accessibility and convenience of the screens allows anybody to use these ordering kiosks which could lead to the spread of germs. However, new anti-bacterial screen protectors are being developed to counteract this problem.

2. Dressing Rooms
As more and more clothing stores use digital signage to attract customers into their stores they need to keep up digital media in the fitting rooms. Digital displays and touch screens in fitting rooms would allow customers to see their clothing selection and request another size. This information could then be transmitted to the shop attendants. I have so many experiences of needing an alternate size but not being able to grab the attention of a shop assistant. Digital signage and interactive screens in fitting rooms would solve this problem.

3. Mall Directories
Not only will digital signage in dressing rooms increase but we will see an increase in digital displays in malls in general. The most common way to get help in a mall is to go to the information desk, but most people prefer to go the digital directory where they are able to view a list of the stores in the mall. I believe that information personnel will be slowly replaced by these digital directories. With touch screen capabilities our questions will be easily answered and our shopping experience will improve.

4. Travel Hubs
Just like mall directories all travel hubs will have an increased presence of digital media. Most airports and train stations already have arrival and departure information displayed on multiple screens throughout the building, but more interactive options like mall directories will become popular. Rather than wait in the long line at the airport gate desk it would be easier to use one of these directory boards to locate the nearest customer service desk. In my travel experience the current digital technology is non-interactive. As our dependence on digital information grows, travel hubs will begin to implement more interactive digital signage options.
